Afonso School of Performing Arts is a young and exciting school for dance and theatre arts. Having recently celebrated our 4 year anniversary, we now offer classes in BALLET, TAP, MODERN JAZZ, CONTEMPORARY, COMMERCIAL JAZZ, ACROBATICS, DRAMA, GROUP SINGING LESSONS and MUSICAL THEATRE to over 200 children, aged 18 months and above.
The establishment is based in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and run by husband and wife team, Alicia and Ricardo Afonso, both West End professionals, with credits including We Will Rock You, Chicago, Top Hat, Thriller Live and BBC1's The Voice UK.
Best known for having a true family and community spirit, we aim to create a fun, yet disciplined environment in which our students can develop skills in dance, acting and singing. Our vision is to offer the highest standard of training possible to children from as young as 18 months. Our team aim to use their combined experience, both as teachers and professionals, to help produce exciting and inspiring lessons where the children will learn skills for life.
Being parents ourselves, we understand how important it is for you to see your child happy, and it is equally as important to see their progression, whether that be a boost in confidence day to day, or an improvement in their performance in the classroom. Parents regularly have the opportunity to see how their child is improving at the end of each term, with a short performance/presentation.
We can assure you that our classes will be fun, yet structured and rewarding. We follow the IDTA syllabus in ballet, tap, modern jazz and musical theatre, and LAMDA for drama. We pride ourselves in having a 100% pass rate for our IDTA and LAMDA examinations, with a large majority passing with Distinction/Honours.
Our principal and Co-Director, Alicia Afonso, is a mum, a former west end professional, a fully qualified dance teacher and a Fellowship member of the IDTA, who are a leading professional body in the dance industry. She has now decided to pursue her career in teaching, where she hopes to be able to transfer her knowledge, experience and dedication to performing arts on to her pupils. A great believer in continuous professional development, Alicia continues to train to improve as a teacher and her aspirations are to become a dance examiner and to be the Principal of a leading performing arts school.
The Co-Director, Ricardo Afonso, originally of Portuguese decent, is an ex-leading man in the West End, having starred alongside Tamson Greig in the Original West End production of 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown', and played the leading role of Galileo in We Will Rock You for many years, often singing alongside Brian May. Ricardo also partipated in BBC1's The Voice UK as a member of team Danny in 2013.
Afonso School of Performing Arts is aiming to produce strong, all-round performers, and build a reputation for getting the best out of our students.
Here at the Afonso School of Performing Arts, we believe that the love of dance can begin from a very young age, and all classes for under 5's should have the main emphasis on having fun. Each class is designed so that our young students can have the freedom to explore their own creativity, whilst learning new dance steps, or lyrics to songs. Using story-telling, instruments and props, allows a toddler to develop strength, co-ordination, balance and musicality, whilst building confidence in even the shiest of children.
